Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto is part of The Luxury Collection by Marriott International.

The property has been developed by an award-winning team of specialists, including André Fu for the guest rooms and lobby, Shunsaku Miyagi for landscape design, and Yohei Akao for the spa and restaurants.

It features 161 rooms including 22 suites, styled in the design of the traditional yet reimagined Japanese tearoom.

The hotel has its own natural spring water source that the spa taps in to. It includes a communal Thermal Onsen Spring, two private natural onsen spring baths, a four treatment rooms.

Two on-property dining venues comprise the signature TOKI restaurant, serving a combination of French and Japanese cuisine, and the all-day dining Italian FORNI.

In addition to the two restaurants, the hotel will also feature a garden bar and a timber-frame SHIKI-NO-MA room available for private dining and gatherings.

General manager Manabu Kusui commented: “HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO represents the true essence of Japan framed alongside contemporary aspects. This is expressed in our brand concept – EMBRACING JAPAN’S BEAUTY and is embodied throughout the property as we have merged tradition and modern philosophy across design, wellbeing, garden artistry and gastronomy. This is an exciting moment for all of us. As the hotel comes into fruition, the design team are adding the touches to make HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO the ultimate emblem of Japan’s beauty. My team and I look forward to opening the hotel and welcoming guests.”

The original hotel building dates back to the early 1900s, when the Canavezes region became known for its hot springs and thermal waters.

The springs are believed to date back to before Portugal was founded, as the Romans discovered and bathed there in 110 A.D. The Portuguese Royal Family were also known to visit the area after 1143.

Now the Palácio de Canavezes hotel is being restored and developed, expanding on the heritage of the area and focusing on holistic wellbeing. The project is being overseen by Porto-based architect Pedro Gomes Fernandes of Europlan, with the interior design being led by Paulo Lobo.

Alan O’Dea, managing director of Campbell Gray Hotels, said: „The restored Palácio de Canavezes will be one of the most sought-after wellness retreats in Europe, offering not only a beautiful setting near Porto but also expert advice on guests’ medical wellbeing. It is a magnificent addition to the Campbell Gray Hotels portfolio of luxury properties and we look forward to its opening in spring 2021.”
