The hotel will have 52 rooms, suites and apartments, a restaurant and terrace, and a PUREGRAY health and wellness facility. It will feature a thermal spa centre, indoor pool, sauna, steam room, relaxation areas, and treatment rooms and hammam that are built into the rockface.
The original hotel building dates back to the early 1900s, when the Canavezes region became known for its hot springs and thermal waters.
The springs are believed to date back to before Portugal was founded, as the Romans discovered and bathed there in 110 A.D. The Portuguese Royal Family were also known to visit the area after 1143.
Now the Palácio de Canavezes hotel is being restored and developed, expanding on the heritage of the area and focusing on holistic wellbeing. The project is being overseen by Porto-based architect Pedro Gomes Fernandes of Europlan, with the interior design being led by Paulo Lobo.
